This sounds like a browser problem. An easy test is to download a new copy of your browser, delete the old browser (in Add/Remove Programs) and then install the new browser. Also you could try switching to IE5 if you are using Netscape or Netscape 4.76 if you are using IE and see if the problem continues.

hi linda

which browser are you using? sounds like a cache thing to me. i might be inclined to point at the 512mb ram as being excessive, except for the fact that you say the pc really rocks in all other tasks and gets progressively worse.

but i am far from being an expert on memory issues!

in netscape (if that is what you are using), what are your settings for both disk and memory cache? and what do you have checked for how often the document in cache is compared to the document on the network?

edit|preferences|expand advanced|cache

if you're using ie, perhaps we can compare your browsing settings under tools|internet options|advanced, and your history setting (days to keep pages in history).

good luck. hope this helps

:)

Suspect DRAM is culprit - any help sure would be appreciated. TIA

Linda

I believe your suspicions are well founded.

Last July during the process of buying a new high end Dell I sent 2 RDRAM computers back due to poor performance and got the 4100 model with 256 SDRAM and have been well satisfied with that choice.

Linda

What are your resource readings when you start seeing these slowdowns?

You can check them by opening the Resource Meter tool found in my system in Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools and perhaps you could post the readings.

You could be experiencing a memory loss from a running program among other things.

Think I finally found an answer to this problem:
Message 15728891
I switched to OPERA as browser, and with a few minor tweaks, e.g., setting the refresh page command to always, I am managing to surf as least as well as my 128 MB SRAM - thank heavens. No more 'done' messages! Doesn't do java in spite of the Java download I selected - i still use Internet Explorer for that.

Also has the ability to page backward very rapidly simply by holding down non-dominate side mouse button( usually right side) and clicking on the left side.
