I think there may be something of a misunderstanding here.

We don't know what the IBM connection is at all and it might be that the contract is for wafer preparation and not the process itself.

On the other hand, it seems that IBM involvement has been present for some time. Kap recalls hearing about it in Oct. '99.

Honestly, if you're going to develop an SOI process, wouldn't it be just plain stupid not to enlist the help of the one company that is actually shipping devices on such a process? Especially if that company is not in the least opposed to sharing its technology (for a price, of course - but a reasonable one).

here is a note from another analyst(Needham & Co.):

".... IBM (IBM, $1113.74, NR) is a more recent partner sharing development of advanced silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process technology....."
