>> The one imediate question that I have now is, how does the rollouts by Sprint and Verizon at year end affect Q's earnings. Is it just newer phones?

Qualcomm will collect royalties on every single cdma phone Sprint and Verizon sells, TV. The question is how many additional phones will be bought as the result of the upgrade.

Both this thread's archive and that of the Moderated Q thread will be excellent resources for your dd on the Q. I'll be interested in hearing your conclusions.
