I installed the powerdefrag, and this was the experience.

After the download, when the installation began, I got a message saying, in sort of awkward English that i wrote down exactly, "Copying file has an earlier version than existing on your computer. It is recommended to keep an existing file."

I was asked if that's what i wanted to do, and said Yes.

The file it was showing was "COM/CAT.DLL"

I thought that would be the only one, but it kept offering different ones. One was STDOLE2.TLB.

At the end, after i'd clicked Yes maybe 6 or 7 times, it installed, and rebooted the computer, and... started defragging, w/o the "locked by a disk utility" message...

And i wasn't in Safe Mode!

However... it did take quite a while to defrag, because it kept having to start over. "Drive contents changed, restarting."

It doesn't matter, though. This computer is destined to be a word processor upstairs. Soon i'll have a new one set up.
