Andreas, while you are technically more correct (imho) if you're talking about peak draw, it is also true that the Athlon runs at a higher temperature since it is dissipating the same amount of power through a much smaller die area. I can't really comment about typical consumption, because I do not know if AMD and Intel use the same types of system loads to do their testing for typical dissipation. I really, truly wish that there were an easy way for a regular joe like me to "benchmark" the power usage of a processor. Anybody have any ideas?

PS: it should also be noted that the Athlon does have a much higher tolerance level than the P4 with respect to die temperatures. IIRC, that is.

Andreas, on P4 current and power consumption, if you look carefully at the Intel documents, the 50 amps of current are not specified at 1.75v but at about Vcc_mid, which is less than 1.75. If the Vcc were momentarily raised to 1.75, the current consumption would be more than 50 amps.
