"Mike, you're reliving a phenomenon known as survivor's guilt. In my view, you have NOTHING to feel guilty
about. If you honestly and honorably opposed our participation, you may feel as proud as those who served and
fought. I feel strongly that, GIVEN the fact that we were engaged in Vietnam, we should have made the effort to
win; however, we probably should never have been engaged in that manner in the first place.

Agree with the above 100%. Always believed our goals were righteous. Problem was we ignored the fact that it was a civil war and kept talking about communist aggression. Our role should have been to support the South with weapons and aid, if the South could gain popular support. We would have lost that war too, but many less lives(both american and vietnamese) would have been lost.
As far as the press goes you shouldnt blame the folks who brought the truth of this war home to the american public. If they hadnt we still would have been fighting it today.
Also, fighting the war with one hand tied behind our back was probably inevitable given the balance of terror that existed then.
As far as survivors guilt goes, I will never be sure that Fear wasnt my major motivation. So I cant say with any assurance that if i would have reacted any differently in avoiding any wartime situation. And seeing the results of all wars fought I am not sure even if thats wrong. But having said that I am not a pacifist.
See what Vietnam conures up for those of us who lived then, when it rears its ugly head.
MORAL Question--Is it right to adopt the enemies tactics in warfare, if they violate our most basic beliefs?.
