If someone had tried to do that analysis at the beginning of that war, maybe we would have opted out.

IF you study history... I actually took TWO upper division US History classes at Berkeley (unusual for an engineer) for the opportunity and we studied Vietnam in one.... the fact of the matter is people DID do the analysis and when they spoke up, their careers were over. It was called the "military industrial complex".

I think is is similar political suicide for a politician to have said in the 1980s and 1990's "We need nuclear power" hence we have an energy shortage and will have to burn coal or natural gas and do more harm to the environment as a result.
