This enhancement allows DSL service providers to offer business subscribers a low-cost alternative to traditional leased-line services for their voice and data applications, such as virtual private networking, voice over DSL, and other data services, using the Alcatel ASAM and Litespan NGDLC. DSL service providers can now deploy Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) and high-speed symmetric DSL from Alcatel DSL systems simply by installing a line card into their existing equipment. Alcatel's high-speed symmetric DSL solution delivers the same high quality of service and functionality as all Alcatel's DSL equipment, using the familiar, field-proven provisioning and network management tools in place today. Based on the International Telecommunications Union standard known as G.shdsl, Alcatel's symmetric DSL solution can deliver symmetric bandwidth of up to 2.3 Mbps on a single wire pair or 4.6 Mbps on two pairs, and can reach customers as far as 48,000 feet away from the service provider's equipment node (using repeaters). Unlike proprietary SDSL, G.shdsl is compatible with ADSL and with E1/T1 and ISDN services, greatly reducing operators' cable management challenges. In addition, G.shdsl delivers rate and reach performance superior to SDSL, providing high-speed DSL service over longer loops, or delivering more bandwidth over an equivalent loop. ``Our customers demand products based on industry standards,'' said Hal Thorne, senior vice-president of Alcatel's Access Products activities. ``Given the scale of today's DSL networks, deploying and supporting multiple, non-standard forms of DSL is costly and time-consuming for service providers. With Alcatel's vast experience in ADSL, we know how to deliver the financial and operational benefits of a standard-based solution to our customers.'' ADSL, the most widely deployed form of DSL, is fully backed by an international standard that enables multi-vendor interoperability among ADSL equipment and fuels a highly competitive equipment market, bringing the benefits of lower prices and increased product innovation to service providers and consumers. As a result, service providers worldwide have embraced ADSL for their mass-market deployments. Alcatel leads the market for ADSL central office equipment, with more than 50 percent global market share, and now brings the benefits of a standard-based solution to high-speed symmetric DSL. Alcatel's high-speed symmetric DSL solution is available worldwide and includes high-density central office and remote terminal deployment options, a variety of customer premise equipment (CPE), and signal repeaters. The line cards are based on GlobeSpan's (Nasdaq: GSPN - news) symmetric chipset, which supports the G.shdsl standard. About Alcatel Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data networking solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide.
