Tony, I really don't see the point here. Why can't the NVLS CEO comment on the business outlook of the chip industry? His industry is inextricably linked to theirs and anybody in that situation would closely monitor it. Just because the chipmaker's wont come out and tell you that business sucks doesn't mean that the Novellus CEO can't say it (if indeed that's the case).

Novellus CEO is just pulling a bunch of other companies down with them, the old drowning man thing
That's an assumption that isn't backed by fact. Every CEO/CFO has his/her own agenda for telling you or not telling you things. In that kind of environment anybody who voices an opinion is helpful to you in determining for yourself what the facts might be. Case in point, INTC's recent optimism and the Dell CFO's comment that Dell is puzzled by Intel's optimism. That has got to be telling you something.

Tony, the message that the NVLS CEO (Rick Hill) is trying to get across is that if semiconductor run rates are between 30 and 80% of available capacity, then there will be little impetus to purchase new equipment except as replacement equipment. I believe that he is trying to say more then there is no visibility, or too much fog.

Who said anything about exact numbers? My point is simply that equipment companies get information from all segments of the industry, whereas individual microprocessor companies like Intel and AMD can only speak to their own segment.

If the opinions he was expressing were bullish, I bet you wouldn't be complaining.
