ALbert,

UMC has been making chipsets for AMD for a while.

I am sure that AMD will be using UMC for some CPU production.

But this will likely happen sometime in early 2002.

In mid 2002 Fab 25 will convert over to Flash.

By end of 2001 Fab 30 will be running at full capacity.

So clearly they will need additional fab capacity in 2002.

So AMD can purchase up to 20% externally per Jerry - so this may be reasonable to expect 20% from UMC by end of 2002-mid 2003.

This whole 20% number is very fudgeable - especially if IBM is involved.

IBM has its own x86 license - so they for example can manufacture as many processors as they want for AMD - should they wish to do so.

What happens if the "manufacture" these at UMC fab is whole another ballgame.

regards,

Kash

Albert,

president of UMC made an announcement that UMC is currently making chipsets for AMD and at this point no plans to make processors.

That makes much more sense. AMD has not maxed out the in-house production, and if they need more capacity, it would be for a better process technology than they already have in Austin (for high end) which I am not sure UMC can offer, or cheap capacity for chipsets.
