Hi Patricia,
The default adapter setting is kind of like Windows safe mode. Usually 60 Hz, with the accompanying flicker unless you don't know any better. If you give a monitor name and model it should be fairly easy to find the factory settings.

Pincushioning and trapezoidal adjust for the non-linearity of the CRT scan. A picture that is wider at the bottom than at the top (or vice versa) on both sides needs trapezoidal adjustment and a picture that is pinched or bulging in the middle needs a pincushioning adjustment. Once the picture is square, tilt lets you rotate the picture if the bottom is not level.

Edit: Sometimes a default setting means that you have a driver that works with your card, ie the generic graphics chip set, but not a driver specifically designed for the particular brand and model. Don't know if that's applicable here, but it is another possibility.
