Hey, it could be worse. Ten years ago the nearest Costco and Walmart were in Bellingham, which is an hour from where the ferry lands in Anacortes. But in the past ten years Burlington has become a major shopping area. First they put in a mall. Then a Fred Myers, a K Mart, and a Target. Then two years ago the WalMart came in, which is much better than FM, KMart, or Target, then last year they opened a Costco. Burlington is only a half-hour from Anacortes, so it saves us an hour (a half hour each way) which is often the difference between being able to make the afternoon ferry and the early evening ferry. Only problem is that there's a Barnes and Noble in Bellingham we rewarded ourselves with, but so far neither B&N nor Borders have come to Burlington. But we have Amazon now, so we're okay.

But I know what you mean about rush hour traffic -- I really dread driving on the mainland. All those cars rushing, rushing everywhere. I don't particularly dawdle on my drive home (we're all the way on the far side of the island, ten miles from town and the ferry dock), the speed limit is 45 and I often go slower than that to watch the wildlife (and watch out for the d@mn tourists, especially the bicyclists who love to stop in the middle of the road right on the curve or at the top of the hill to admire the view). I almost always see deer, in the evenings often a racoon, a red fox has moved into our neighborhood and I see him a few times a week, and if I'm lucky I catch an eagle or two, though my wife is much better at spotting eagles than I am. But driving on the mainland -- hate it. So I don't blame you for not wanting to go out in that stuff.

When I occasionally start to feel sorry for myself for not being able to dash out and pick up things I forgot to pick up on the last Costco trip I just pull out one of the Little House books and think about the problems THEY had with shopping, and I feel just fine.
