If you have a good a.m. radio try and tune in to CBC on Saturday night and pick up Danny Finkleman and his show.

Danny is the best reason to be a Canadian.

Ten years ago the nearest Costco and Walmart were in Bellingham

You'll be surprised to hear that there's no Walmart in my usual territory. I was in a Walmart for the first time in my life perhaps a year ago. (And can't imagine why I'd ever want to go back.) My home is in the close-in burbs. There's rarely enough free land available to build a big-box store. I can't say that I feel deprived. I've never felt the need to drive the fifteen or twenty miles to the outer burbs to shop.

There's a Costco that arrived a few years ago. I've been in it with a friend but I would never join. It's against my religion to pay a store for the privilege of spending my money there. The first time I ever saw that concept was in your part of the world when I was living in Tacoma in the 60's. Wouldn't join then. Won't join now. The other problem I have with Costco is that, when you go there, you buy what they sell rather than them selling what you want to buy. I prefer shopping at reliable sources for the products I like.

Like I said, I'm spoiled. There's a wonderful store not too far from me called the Mediterranean Bakery. It's a reliable source for my Baci and for Zaterain's Creole mustard, the best mustard I've ever had. I discovered it the first time I was in New Orleans eons ago and have loved it ever since. The store is primarily Middle Eastern, but they have the best supply of international condiments and other oddities. I can get fresh pita and the best key lime tarts along with I don't know how many choices of Kalamata olives. I've talked before of my fondness for Chinese eggplant, Mexican papaya, and Ethiopian cuisine. Mexican papaya is available in a Safeway not too far from me. Injira I can get at an African and Caribbean grocery and most Asian groceries sell eggplant. When I think about relocating... Fortunately, some of that is now available on the internet. It will be an adjustment.
