Catman...Short is not a crime...but...

the human nature is built on the fact that our ancestors use to teach to do the buying rather than the selling. For thousand years, American or non-American, most of us are told to get a good education, find a good job and spend money (i.e. buying).
For the investment side, we are told to buy and hold not to sell short. So when you do things that's against the social conception/culture you are marked as a bad guy.
Like Donald mentioned in his post that 97% of individual investors put their savings or 401k on the long side thru the big boyz like MLCO or GS. And when the market turn south, their normal reaction is to curse the short sellers i.e. put the blame on another investors, specially since we have bashers on the internet (5,10 years ago, before the on-line mania, you seldomly heard about short sellers unless you are in the field). They don't know and do want to believe that the ones who take care of their eggs are also the ones who steal their mullas everyday because their slogan is to have a long term vision. They pay them a misely 7%-12% over 5 to 10 years in the bull market while I don't know how billions dollars they pocket during that time.
With today on-line trading, the little guys with no investment experiences besides all the hypes thru the Net, think that they can beat the system by handling their own money. They will be wiped out sooner or later with all the dirty games of Mr. Market.
Just look at the percentage of winners come back from Vegas or Atlantic city...
