Don't mean to interrupt your discussion with Maurice. Your post, however, dragged up some memories of your part of the world which I treasure.

Eons ago, when I was a small fry, my family took a trip from the deserts of Mexico to British Columbia. The study in contrasts was about as stark as you can imagine. From dusty Mexico to the greenest, wettest place I had ever seen that wasn't a tropical jungle.

As I recall, we took a ferry from Seattle to Victoria, then spent a few days there. We took another ferry from Victoria to the southern tip of Alaska. Nanaimo is the only name I recall from that leg of the journey.

I can wholeheartedly agree with your characterization of the beauty of the area. I recall visiting an outstanding botanical garden, an impressive museum in Victoria, and will never forget the Empress Hotel, where we stayed. It's the only time I've ever slept on a feather bed.

I'm going there again, someday.
