The notion of banning breastfeeding in any public place seems as absurd to me as any of
the "ban whatever I don't like" exercises. Anyone who is offended by a woman discreetly
feeding a child can simply be told not to look.

This assumes there is, or should be, some logic to what is accepted in society and what is not.

IMO, there isn't. It's just a shambles of tradition, which actually works a lot of the time.

For example, in most places (in the US) it's a crime for a woman to walk around with her nipples uncovered, but not for a man. It's indecent to have sexual intercourse in public (even though anybody who is offended by it can simply be told not to look), but not to kiss, even to French kiss. And on and on.

Morals and standards are not based on logic. Frankly, I think it's grosser to be confronted with a man's sweaty, hairy chest than a woman nursing a baby, but nobody asked me.

<< she can easily be asked to be more discreet, not because she is breastfeeding, but because she is creating a disturbance. >>

I've never heard anyone complain about the act of breastfeeding, just the public disturbance it creates when done in a non-discreet manner.

But public breast feeding can be lumped in with any number of activities which expose private parts publicly. If you accept public breast feeding, why not public sex, nudity, or urination?
