Chartered Talks Chip Turnaround, but Lacks Specifics

MONTEREY, Calif. -- One of the largest makers of chips for companies like Broadcom (BRCM:Nasdaq - news) and PMC-Sierra (PMCS:Nasdaq - news) says the chip business will turn around some time in the second half -- but exactly when is anyone's guess.

Chartered Semiconductor's (CHRT:Nasdaq - news) outlook isn't exactly surprising given that both Broadcom and PMC-Sierra have expressed a similar sentiment in recent weeks. But with the year's second half now only about seven weeks away, Chartered's comments do make clear that the much talked about turnaround probably won't happen until later in the year.

Slow April sales for foundry makers. UMC (2303 TT) reported April sales of NT$5.81bn, down 11.7% from March and 21.1% yoy. UMC's April decline was less than the firm’s internal forecast of nearly 30%, and also better than market expectation of around 20%. TSMC’s (2330 TT) April sales were NT$9.2bn, down 21.4% from the previous month but up 4% year-on-year, in line with market expectations. Despite poor April sales, we recommend to BUY UMC and TSMC long-term given that the semiconductor industry is likely to bottom out in the second half.
