At least Reagan got the money needed to end the cold war. Seems worth the price to me.

JL,

Look at the numbers carefully. The best combination was Clinton + Dem Congress. The worst was Reagan + Republican Senate.

Try again:

1. Reagan had a Republican Senate for his first six years. During that time (1981-1986) he averaged 9.04% YOY increase in spending. His last two years, he had an all Democratic Congress and averaged 3.70% YOY increase in spending. Democrats win by a huge margin.

2. Clinton had a Democratic Congress for his first two years. He averaged 2.87% YOY increase during that time. The last 6 years under the Republicans he averaged 3.43% YOY increase. Democrats win again.

Democratic Presidents and Congresses do better at controlling spending than do Republican Presidents or Congresses. Do the math yourself (if you can):

Revenues Spending
1981 599,272 678,249
1982 617,766 745,755
1983 600,562 808,385
1984 666,486 851,874
1985 734,088 946,423
1986 769,215 990,460
1987 854,353 1,004,122
1988 909,303 1,064,489

1993 1,154,401 1,409,512
1994 1,258,627 1,461,902
1995 1,351,830 1,515,837
1996 1,453,062 1,560,572
1997 1,579,292 1,601,282
1998 1,721,798 1,652,611
1999 1,827,454 1,703,040
2000 1,956,252 1,789,562
