We're used to American math, not English math.

The one term I spent in school in England cured me totally of any belief that the average Englishman or woman could do mathematics. I mean, you buy six apples at 6 pence farthing each, two and a quarter pounds of bananas at 1 s 2 d per pound, and two boxes of laundry power at 1 pound four pence haypenny each, and what's you bill? I haven't a CLUE. And I was a math whiz before I was subjected to a term in second form in a second tier public boarding school.
