Dell ventures which Tom leads, has not been a stellar performer this year.

That explains it.

Companies like Microsoft did much better during the technology bubble phase in investing their cash. Dell probably wasted too much on Linux or other internet companies.

BTW--the politically incorrect reason probably made it a bit easier to part.
