I was actually interpreting Seykota's POV, not offering my own. Nevertheless I only agree in part with you that "the bottom line for any achievement comes down to...are you willing to pay the price to get it."

Some things you just can't achieve no matter how much of a price you pay. For instance, you can't will yourself to compose a nice piece of music. "Paying the price" to get something works best in matters that do not involve talent. For instance, it doesn't take talent to diet, exercise, and lose the twenty pounds my wife wishes I would lose.

FWIW I do not believe in determinism, or behaviorism, or anything else that precludes a free will (I don't think natural selection implies determinism, either).

The "killer application" here is talent and perhaps we're all wondering if talent can be acquired or just developed. I tend to think it's the latter.
