A lot of people (like me) in the recent/upcoming retiree pool don't have any pensions because of the downsizing and jobhopping of the past 30 years. Social Security, IRA's, etc. are a lot more important than they once were.

there are a good many people that invest kids' college funds in the equity markets, and wisely so.

There is no way in heck that the time horizon of those funds is 30 years much less never need this capital, unless you want you kids to have pretty significant work experience prior to entering undergrad.
