Joe: So if Paly has SSE, the decision to keep it secret (after say November 2000) has a net negative effect for the company

Ahhh, but that depends on how you look at it. Is "the company" the short-medium term share value? Or is it the really long term value?

If AMD announcing SSE and SSE2 support would make Intel move up its plans - or even just make new ones for the longer term - AMD might be right in keeping it to itself.

However, I basically agree with you - I'm just trying to convey how I think Jerry's line of reasoning goes: Share valuation isn't really a priority with him - as long as he can do what's best for the company (in his mind), AMD's market cap will reflect that at some point.

Personally, I think odds are good that Intel know exactly what Palomino has to offer and in that case it really is just AMD investors who are being held in the dark.

AMD, Intel, the Palomino and the P4 - Certain aspects of products from both AMD and Intel seem to be continuously overlooked. Many people believe that the Palomino will just be a slightly re architecture Athlon Thunderbird but we believe there is more to it than most believe.

AMD's roadmap shows the Athlon Palomino making its debut at around 1533MHz. Considering that the PIII never made it past 1GHz on the .18 process, this is a great feat. Both the PIII and the Athlon feature a 10 stage pipeline, and 256K L2 cache, on a .18u process, yet the Athlon is still going strong and should reach a lofty 1.7GHz by the end of the summer.

<< But let's take SSE. If it is supported, why not announce it at some point? In SSE vs. 3DNow, SSE has won, there is no point in pretending otherwise, since AMD already announced tha both SSE and SSE-2 will be supported by Hammer family. So if Paly has SSE, the decision to keep it secret (after say November 2000) has a net negative effect for the company, since AMD doesn't have a checkmark in this one category (at least on the roadmap. >>

Sure if we have it, then it should be announced, and the fact that it hasn't been anounced is pretty strong evidence that it hasn't happened. Name one big feature that went unannouned until just before the chip came out on any version of the athlon. I can't think of any, which leads me to believe that the rest of this discussion is a bunch of pipe dreams.

I hope I'm wrong, I hope it has SSE, SSE2, HWP, and the improved inclusive cache (actually, I believe this one is actually posssible, since it wouldn't really generate much press, but I still think it unlikely), scales over 2ghz on the .18 process, and consumes 1 watt of power. I just think the odds of any of those things are real low.
