This is common? I've never seen or heard of a cooling fan pop off. I've built probably 20 athlon systems now, but that same experience applies to any of the systems I've built (maybe 40-50 in total).

Not to say lack of thermal management isn't a problem. The chip should not be able to fry itself, but the only instance I would think it'd be common is if someone who doesn't know what they are doing decides to start up the computer without a fan on the processor.
