"It" could be about all sorts of things. Of course, given the rigidity of the caste system and the support given to it through the doctrine of reincarnation, I would hesitate to accuse any other religion of using doctrines about the afterlife as a means of social control.

As for the goal, well, some people find the notion of Nirvana desirable. I do not. The idea of loss of self as a goal, even if the result is infinite bliss, does not comport with my sense of the proper disposition of things. Nor do I believe that my true self, my atman, is God. I believe in an infinite gap between Creator and Creature, that can only be bridged through the benevolence of the Creator. That may mean that I have limited understanding, of course. Or it may be true.
