Florida Gov. Bush Denies Rumors of Affair

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Reuters) - Florida Gov. Jeb Bush denied rumors of a sexual affair with a woman he appointed to lead a state agency and said on Monday he had never been unfaithful to his wife of 27 years.

``As you know, there have been persistent rumors about my fidelity to my wife,'' Bush told reporters at a bill-signing ceremony in the state capital. ``I've been faithful to her. There is nothing to these rumors. It is an outright lie.''

It was the first time Bush, younger brother of President Bush (news - web sites), publicly commented on the rumors of an affair with Cynthia Henderson, who he appointed last September as secretary of the state Department of Management Services.

The rumors had circulated in Tallahassee and on Internet Web pages for weeks and several newspapers recently have written about the allegations.

Bush, 48, called the rumors ``hurtful'' and said the questions about his fidelity to his wife Columba were ``sick.''

His office previously denied rumors that Columba Bush had moved out of the governor's mansion, the Orlando Sentinel said.

Bush has been married to his wife for 27 years and the couple have three children. The Republican governor was inaugurated to his first term in January 1999 and has said he will announce next month whether he will seek re-election in 2002.

Henderson, 40, was a partner in a Tampa law firm specializing in land use issues until Bush appointed her to head the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation in 1999. He appointed her last September to her current job as head of the agency that oversees building and maintenance of state facilities, inter-agency telecommunications services and insurance and retirement programs for state workers.

Henderson was not immediately available for comment but several newspapers said she had previously denied the rumor of an affair.

The fed position on marijuana is absurd to me. The drug war is a failure, and IMO has done more harm than good anyway.

Your point about, where there is a market, there will be a supply, is key. Even if pot (the substance) was eradicated, we would still have the problem of people wanting to numb themselves from reality. THIS is the issue that we should be addressing. These people who want to numb themselves from reality (quite a high percentage of the population when you include alcohol along with the other illegal drugs), will find a way regardless of legislation. And, IMO the difference in legality of alcohol is a moot point. Anybody who drinks alcohol and then takes a strong position against other drugs is a hypocrite to me.

And the fact that the gov is willing to sacrifice the medical benefits that marijuana can provide to protect an absurd and failed policy, well....it pisses me off.

I believe about half the jail cells in this country are now occupied by drug offenders. In CA about ten years back we had to pass a large bond issue to build more prisons to hold them. Absurd.
