Eric,

Clusters of computers are extremely versatile. They sit on people's desks and are used as workstations during the day. At night large jobs are farmed out to them.

Eric,

Besides that, what kind of performance do you think a cluster of quad Itaniums could do versus some single cpu x86's. That would be a cluster farm on steroids.

That is how the discussion got started. At the same price point, the x86 system would blow away the Merced system for almost all applications.
