" {=====================================} Intel’s Itanium debut on the way E-lan Ning, Taipei; Heidi Chu, DigiTimes.com [Thursday 26 April 2001] Intel is preparing to release its 64-bit Itanium microprocessor for the high-end server market in the first half of 2001. David M. Cowan, vice president of Intel’s architecture group and general manager of the enterprise chipset division and enterprise platforms group, said that the company is set to introduce the successor, McKinley, in the second half. With Intel’s new microprocessor, Taiwan IT manufacturers can employ their original design manufacturer (ODM) prowess to pursue opportunities in the high-end server market, Cowan added. So far, Intel has shipped 35,000 Itanium pilot systems to related software providers to help them incorporate application programs into Itanium platforms, Cowan noted. To date, nearly 400 application programs have been executed on Itanium platforms. According to sources, Linux’s 64-bit operating system and HP’s HP-UNIX will both support Itanium in its launch period. The company plans to launch 460GX and 870 chipsets in line with the introduction of Itanium. The 460GX supports up to four Itanium processors linked to PC100 SDRAM memory while 870 chipsets can support 2-512 CPUs, Cowan explained. Cowan emphasized that Itanium is intended for Internet data centers (IDCs) managing high-volume data processing and applications. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), front and low-end products account for 84% of the global server market while mid-range and high-end products take 12% and 4%, respectively. Itanium is aimed at the high-end market, Cowan noted. Despite little experience in the server market, Taiwan, which has an edge in manufacturing muscle, strong and flexible design ability, still stands a chance in the small-volume and high-end of the server sector, Cowan said. Adoption of Intel 460GX chipsets supporting Itanium to make server products would be a good starting point for Taiwan IT manufacturers entering the sector, Cowan added.
