Dear Fingolfen:

I have a 1425MHz Tbird (1200/266 overclocked to 150x9.5). I already out run a 2+GHz P4. Athlon 4 outruns mine by a few percent in tests on a per clock basis. To get even a parity on most benchmarks, some heavily SSE optimized, a P4 must be clocked at 4/3 of a Tbird to obtain about a 50/50 split. If heavy number crunching is required, P4 needs about 1.5 times Tbird for parity. Thus, a 1.4GHz Tbird matches well to 2GHz P4. Athlon 4 at 1.3GHz would probably match 2GHz P4. Since 1.8GHz Athlon 4s are probable due to current multiplier maps (18x100). There might be a chance that end of Q4-01, Athlon 4s could be up to 2+GHz themselves and transistion to 2-3GHz Throughbreds. So P4, even at 0.13u, may not have the performance crown for its whole life.

Pete

Fin, <McKinley appears to be running initially on 0.18 micron. There will undoubtedly be a 0.13 micron shrink of this chip as well (though it is unclear whether or not there will be a 0.13 micron shrink of the Merced core, help Ten?).>

There will be no 0.13u shrink of Merced. Intel is going straight from 0.18u Merced to 0.18u McKinley to 0.13u Madison (McKinley shrink).

Fin - Re: "AMD as the "Luke Skywalker"

AMD is better characterized as the "Puke SlyTalker".
