Charles-- they are far less proprietary than awhile back. I do prefer DELL (after Micron PC) and certainly INTC over AMD-- just preferences. Also,, for those that do not play much--- DELL supports as long as you own it,, even after warranty. Other than my kids that get free tech support,,, I suggest all think about that when buying. A former employee just recd a disk with a few lines of code after DELL walked him through formatting C and reloading.... all on a P200MMX. That machine must be 5 years old and no charge of course.

What's to prefer?
People are ALWAYS falling for the brand name thing (From Jordache jeans to Calvin Klein cologne). I am willing to pay for a brand name, if there's a good reason.
I don't know if CPQ does use more proprietary parts, but so what if they do? Micron does, and I have replaced huge portions of my old Micron PC without a problem, and with non-Micron parts....

Dell does great marketing. I am always in awe of a good marketing machine (AOL, MSFT, etc). CPQ has very mediocre marketing. That is clearly a differential, but it isn't enough to offset $130-400, in my opinion.
