RE:<Epi, As I see it the best threat is for Dell to make a line of AMD based products. Since only the mobo and a cosmetic label will differ this is a low cost way to do shake a stick at intel and grab some of that 30% that AMD has that dell gets no sniff of now.>

Bill,

I don't believe that the creation of a mobile design at Dell just entails a different motherboard and cosmetic label. I think the creation of any design but a mobile design especially takes time, effort, and is not of insignificant cost. Then on top of the traditional difficulties consider the fact that AMD would be a completely new entity to Dell as far as design and validations go and also the further nuisance of designing around a full ceramic packaged chip that is twice the size of a mobile PIII and a larger chipset as well and I think you have to arrive at the conclusion that the "stick" that you propose would be non-trivial to wield.

And you are postulating that Dell would do all that to save...how much? how much could Dell reasonably be able to expect to extort from Intel in the form of additional price concessions by such a threat?

Even if I hate DELL because it is a member of the devil-empire, I might be the first one to buy a DELL A4 notebook.
