Bracknell Forest Launches National Forum to Promote Smart Card Technology 24th April 2001 Bracknell Forest Borough Council is joining forces with a number of local authorities in leading a National SmartCard Networking Forum to promote the use of smart card technology, as part of the move towards electronic government. The inaugural meeting takes place on May 22nd at Novell's offices in Bracknell, Berkshire. The SmartCard Networking Forum aims to share experiences and successes and to learn from other Councils how smart card technology can be introduced for the benefit of local people. The Smart Card Networking Forum conference is endorsed by the I&DeA and sponsored by independent local government consultants, LDA plc. Industry partners Novell and BT are also supporting this nationwide initiative. Around 120 people are expected to attend the event from local authorities across the country . Speakers include Gordon Mitchell, Chief Executive of Bracknell Forest Borough Council and William Barker, e-Government strategist at the I&DeA . Case studies will be presented by John Littleton, Chair of the North East SmartCard Consortia and from Spencer Robeson, a consultant who until recently led the 'Herts Smart Scheme' at Hertfordshire County Council. John McAllister, responsible for regulation and SmartCard development at BT, will provide an update on SmartCard technologies for the future . Bracknell Forest is leading the way in developing multi-application smart card technology for use by its residents. In partnership with Novell, the Council has developed a secure internet gateway service which residents can use to interact about Council Tax and planning applications. And sixth form pupils at secondary schools in the Borough are using 'Connexions' smart cards to register their attendance electronically and build up reward points that can be redeemed at a number of leisure facilities. "We're very pleased with the progress we have made so far in introducing new technology to Bracknell Forest, but we recognise there is much to be gained from sharing our experiences with other like-minded local authorities," says Chief Executive Gordon Mitchell. "We are keen to set up a forum through which we can regularly discuss new ideas and developments with our colleagues across the country and hope that many other Councils will share our enthusiasm for the exciting innovations that are becoming a reality through new technology."
