It was less than a week ago when Dell Computer announced an additional 3 to 4,000 people will lose their jobs within the next six months. Former and current Dell workers tell News 36 that Dell doesn't want laid-off employees to talk to the media and will give better severance packages to ones who don't speak out. These are tough times for the people over at Dell. Sources say that there is a constant sense of impending doom for many of them who don't know how long they'll have jobs. The people News 36 spoke to Tuesday say it doesn't have to be that way. "Two words always come to mind, and those words are slave shop," a former Dell employee said. This former Dell employee says he's not surprised by the lay offs. Nor is he surprised at, what some call, the "ruthless" way management is doing it. "I saw my co-workers being mistreated by management. Their work was not respected. There were people we looked up to for help and they got mistreated. And I didn't want to be part of that system," the former employee said. While there's no nice way to tell someone they're out of a job, this employee says Dell management adds insult to injury. "There's supposedly this list going around, no one knows if they're on the list, and we're just sitting there waiting to see if we're going to be one of the ones that are going to be laid off and that is and can be very stressful working in that type of environment," another former Dell employee said. She hopes Dell will provide counseling to its employees. Meanwhile, like thousands of other current and ex-Dell employees who log on to a variety of Dell chatrooms, she says there has to be a better way. "We already know there's going to be layoffs, but if we could at least know when we are going to be laid off that would help tremendously. It would let us leave with some dignity," the former employee said. These folks say the one thing they want at this point is to be heard. They want Dell management to communicate openly with them. Maybe even take suggestions on how to soften the blow for everyone. Insiders say more lay-offs are expected very soon.
