the phrase was "cut off their air supply".

We also used the same phrase when I was at Oracle w.r.t. the competition. I was with the PC group, and we focused on Ashton-Tate (dBase). Anyone remember the old Oracle ads showing a jet fighter labelled "Oracle" shooting down a bi-plane labelled "dBase"?

The phrase by itself is no big deal. It's okay to target a specific competitor. If you're not out to beat the competition (individually and collectively), why are you in business? The problem comes when you use illegal or unethical tactics to accomplish that goal.
