Bah. There's no way that AMD is realistically positioning K8 against IPF. They may bluster about it, but when it comes to counting the grains the K8 will be competing against the Xeon at top and the higher end 130nm Netburst processor (whether northwood or a quick unnamed successor) of the time. I don't think Jerry Sanders has any real illusions about taking it any higher than that unless it becomes tremendously and successfully established.

Fin, <Based on what I'm seeing from the AMD roadmap, the K8 series isn't for your desktop, so it won't really be competing against P4... It will be trying to face off against IA-64 in the form of a 0.13 micron version of McKinley... or better...>

Unless I'm mistaken, the first K8 will be Clawhammer, and that's meant for desktops and workstations. AMD's plans for the high-end revolve around Sledgehammer, which according to the roadmap enables 4-way and 8-way SMP. That is AMD's real answer to McKinley.

Of course, it's looking like Clawhammer won't be here until even after McKinley, so there's no telling how far Sledgehammer will slip, if it even makes it to market.

While Jerry does not expect Athlon to keep up with Northwood, it will take until mid 2002 for Athlon to fall back to the point that TBird versus Willamette are now. Barton is just to keep Athlon in the game long enough for Clawhammer to take over.

Additionally, it is only on the desktop that Athlon will not be able to keep up. The mobile Barton should be able to keep up with even mobile P4 well into 2003.
