Rob, <The topic was Itanium marketing.>

I don't think anyone disputes the fact that Itanium has slipped further than a missed putt on the glassy greens of a PGA tournament. When Itanium is finally released, the breeze you'll be feeling will have been caused by the collective sigh of relief from employees in Santa Clara, Oregon, and Washington.

<EV7 doesn't suffer the same fate as following are spins on EV6 that keep getting stronger and within a few months EV6 boxes will be back at the top of Spec2000 and TPC-C.>

Point taken. The Alpha infrastructure is already out, and future proliferations of EV6 can tide customers over until EV7 is released.

But EV7 is important in that it may be Alpha's only real chance against Itanium or McKinley. With Xeon leading most of the TPC-C charts and Itanium set to push the records even further, EV6 will have a hard time keeping up. A timely release of EV7 is key to countering this sort of competition, just like a timely release of Northwood is key to Intel countering the competition from AMD's Athlon.
