Yup. been mulling it over for 4 years. We're over a mile from the end of the line. 80k then 300 clownbucks a month for juice based on prior use. The system i'm looking at is a combo diesel and photo panels(on the water tank roof so not really visible), batteries are deep cycle from Costco(they keep lots of boat batteries in stock). Battery life is 5 years and cost is $500 per set of batteries. Diesel runs $200-300/year. Total system installed including generator, batteries, Trace Inverter, panels, etc. is about 16k. It will power everything including the washer. We'll use propane stove, hot water(w/roof panel add on) and dryer. I expect the monthly cost to run it to be about $150, max. Over the long run it should be fine. The guy putting in the system put in a simple set of photo panels, an inverter and a bi-directional electric meter(?) in his brother's house in Long Beach last year. The 1st month the electric bill went from $400 to $6 on a partial month. I expect he'll be making money when that 80% hike goes into effect. -g-
