Here are the historical, inflation adjusted prices of gasoline in CA from 70 to present. The present $2 is higher than average but not the highest by any means. The cost of State Government has inflated from 5% of per capita personal income in the 60's to 9% per capita of personal income today. A comparison would yield $2.55 per gallon gas. Sales tax has inflated from 4% to over 8% also. Inflation adjusted costs per student in k-12 was $3000 in the '60's and is over $7000 today. All things considered I would have to consider gasoline to be the bigger bargain.

Jerry Taylor, director of natural resources studies at the Cato Institute says natural gas industry construction is so extensive it has cut futures for 2003 to half of today's prices.
