Jim, Re: Intel ...cutting big time deals.

I'm not sure Intel can afford to cut big time deals any longer. At least not to the extent they did before.

Unless they decide, the hell with it, let's just completely trash this quarter (and the next couple)-- 'The Engel Contingency' -- in hopes of keeping share and ruining AMD.

Seems unlikely to me, though.

Doug

Jim:

I suspect that "loyalty" is only a consideration where "win" products are involved...When "clean kill" products come along, "loyalty" takes a distant second to "maintenance of status quo" and/or "survival" !!!

Dell has already demonstrated undue amount of "loyalty" to INTC over the past 2 years in response to INTC's seemingly endless promises over that period of closing the price/performance gap on AMD...Just hasn't happened and the palomino has now arrived on the scene which widens the gap considerably, and in new market segments, i.e laptop, server and workstation segmants...Dell can afford no longer to allow "loyalty" to interfere with their need to maintain their "status quo" as a world leader!!!Dell has already paid a heavy "loyalty" price!!!

Jim,
The importance of what you just said can't be understated enough. I shuddered when I heard of that deal. Of course it was Microsoft that made the deal , but Intel greased the wheels by offerin a real sweet deal too. It was a brilliant move by Microsoft to undermine Intel by seemingly helping it.
Hats off to Microsoft. The Christmas gaming scene is gonna be on hell of a barn burner if X-box gets out of the gates on time. Get out your gamin' thumbs.

Also, be advised that Intel supplying XBox chips to Microsoft pretty much sealed AMD as a Sony chip supplier.
Intel showed no loyalty to Sony, Sony will show no loyalty to Intel.

Most notebooks at Fry's are Sony's, but the only AMD powered notebook was the mobile Duron 800 (so far.) Sweet looking machine. It has 128mb of SDRAM, when most of the Celeron or PIII notebooks only had 64mb. I think you hit the nail on the head that Dell better be careful here as Sony appears to be taking the notebook world by storm, hopefully a green storm.

As far as desktops, Intel based systems abound at Fry's. They even have a 1.7ghz P4 (sorry, I don't remember if Compaq or HP). Unfortunately, it appears that all the Athlon systems had 128mb of SDRAM, couldn't see any DDR systems. One of the salesmen I talked to believes the "Mhz Sells" (TM Jim McMannis), as he said the 1.7 P4 is the fastest machine they have. I mentioned that I read that Athlon systems had higher performance per mhz over P4, but I'm afraid it fell on deaf ears.

Never thought of this one. But I think it makes ton of sense. In Japanese business culture, loyalty weights huge. OTOH, I have being thinking about a full-featured VAIO box because I want nice integration with other SONY stuff. But before today, I was disheartened because the best VAIO AMD box was a Duron 800 without DVD. Now, I am a happy man! Knowing that SONY will have A4 notebooks (stripped or not), I will be happier. If SONY thinks AMD is fine, it's fine to everybody, including that *ell boy.
