there is one problem though, i don't think this is as easy to fix as fdiv

What is there to fix? Nothing is broken. It's behaving as intended.

what do you think are the chances that intc will issue a statement saying "we have investigated this issue and only a very small number of customers will be effected. we will make a case by case decision on whether to replace the p4 based on if the customer is running an application which will expose this problem" ?

I can't say. I don't have any near enough understanding of
the criteria under which this throttling takes place or the particular type of software which will trigger it. That information probably has to come from Intel. But, if they don't come clean, it is possible that it could blow up into a bigger issue than it really is. I would guess that after the article, every geek with an Intel chip on his shoulder (and access to a P4 system) will be investigating this issue. Meanwhile, Intel sits quietly by..
