hey tc

you're welcome. i just wanted you to know symantec servers were rolling again.

i've had a heightened awareness of virus threats the last few days. norton personal firewall produced an alert yesterday, saying, in part...

"Application: 5s is attempting to access the internet
Remote Service: Outbound TCP on Pop3 port 110
"

that coupled with emailed virus warnings from two of my isp's has me really paying close attention. one isp missive stated...

"An Internet 'worm' has been spreading rapidly among our users that are running various versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems. We are sending out this email to alert our members to the risks involved, and to help point out solutions to this problem.

Our Systems Administrators are finding several new members with the "W95.Hybris" internet worm every day. Because of the near epidemic volume of member infections from this particular worm, we have elected to provide the information below to you."

the email went on to post symantec support links.

the great thing about the npf alert is that i have that firewall configured to ask permission for anything coming or going. rules have obviously been written for the repeat access applications, so i'm not going crazy with permissions. but i do get the opportunity to block this "5sÂ" crap. extra added plus is that zonealarm and blackice had nothing to say about the attempt.

the fact that it was an outbound attempt gives me cause for pause as well.

it's good to be aware these days.

:)
