It has been around for a few years.

But the cost of deployment has been high, while the cost of 10/100 Meg Ethernet has PLUMMETED in the past 3 or 4 years.

CAT 5 cabling has become cheap and pervasive - but I recollect that standard CAT 5 cabling won't work on Gigabit Ethernet - making upgrades even more expensive - and painful.
