"that it is necessary to keep Saddam Hussein from controlling our oil supply."

Are you trying to claim that Iraq supplies a major portion of our oil supply right now? The world has done without much production from Iraq since the Gulf War, do you predict this is going to change? Or are you just trying to push various hot buttons like the Shrub and Company without anything but emotion behind it?

Unless Hussein takes Kuwait and possibly Saudi Arabia, the chances of him being in control of the world's oil supply is reasonably close to zero. But you probably know that already...

David,

I think it is important to keep in mind that we wouldn't have this problem had the previous administration had the gumption to put forth a little leadership

What problem, and which administration?

2) I believe most Americans, when asked a question that is properly structured, will support drilling in Alaska. If you ask, "Do you support drilling in Alaska if it (a) reduced our dependence on Iraq & others for oil, and (b) if necessary to insure a ready supply of oil at reasonable prices over the coming few years?", they will answer the question in the affirmative

Given your position, I think you will be greatly surprised as to what Americans will support....but just wait til 2004.

Seems like some posters don't understand the politics of energy as well as you do.
I suggest that you continue your logic with the remaining points you neglected to address.
I think I saw a David Letterman special recently that listed 10 reasons why drilling the ANWR
is good for America and therefore good for the world:

1. It'll stop Saddam from ruining our lives ! (you got this one)

2. It will help us cure lung cancer by reducing our dependence on dirty coal and poisonous natural gas.

3. It will keep our kids off drugs and in their SUVs.

4. It will feed the hungry and shelter the homeless in upscale Houston.

5. It will show the Chinese they can't push us around.

6. It will pay our UN dues which we don't intend to pay anyway.

7. It will reduce global warming by increasing the flow of cold oil to the surface.

8. It will preserve our pristine wilderness by reducing underground oil pollution in the ANWR.

9. It will show those uppity Canadians they can't push us around !

10. It will keep Alaska Senators Stevens and Murkowski from simultaneously turning Democrat,
which would destroy the two-party system as we know it.
