Has a 'pleasant' constitutional monarchy, absent major external force or violent overthrow, ever been removed in the modern era but the country remained a good place to live? - in other words, can anyone recall a nation where the head of state has been changed peacefully and democracy continued? I obviously discount colonies for this since it's not really their own HoS they're removing.

The nearest I can think of is the stepping down of Napoleon III, but that was following defeat by Germany and the ceding of territory, nor was the country then particularly modern... Leopold of Belgium abdicated, but was effectively deposed in WWII anyway, and they're still a monarchy... anyone else?
