re: DoCoMo 3G Profitability

>> DoCoMo Believes 3G Profits Equal to 2G in 3 Years

date: May 22, 2001

Keiichi Enoki, managing director Gateway Business Department at NTT DoCoMo said on Tuesday to the press the company would not completely cover Japan with 3G services until 2004 and sees 3G profits equal to I-mode at the same year.

He warned, the company would have to wait three years for 3G to make matching profits to I-Mode as consumers are not convinced unless we can get full 3G coverage in Japan.

He said 3G roll-out is a complex task which can only be gradually roll-out to provide a very smooth transition to 3G network, consequently consumers have to wait.

He assured the press the technology has high potential in Japan where wireless is a big culture as can be seem with I-mode and 3G does not need any killer applications. <<

Different take on Nokia/Nortel/Omnitel

22 May 2001
Nokia Knocked Out- Nortel Wins Omnitel Vodafone Italy 3G/ UMTS Deal
From Simon Buckingham of Mobile Lifestreams
In a shock announcement today, Omnitel Italy awarded a contract for radio access equipment contract to Nortel Networks. Omnitel is dominated by Nokia equipment- switches, base stations, GPRS. Omnitel is Nokia's largest SMSC customer with dozens of SMS Centers- Nokia's machine does not scale seamlessly hence the need for multiple platforms.

It is particularly surprising that Nortel have a contract to upgrade Nokia's radio equipment-

Nokia is mainly an infrastructure supplier to GSM 1800 tier 2 or 3 networks such as WIND in Italy and Omnitel is clearly a tier 1 networks with lots of customers and innovations. Just last week tier 1 networks in China selected infrastructure from several companies apart from Nokia, who did announce a 25 m US dollar deal with Hainen Mobile Communications for SMSC gear.

Nortel has a strategy of opening local Research and Development centers- it opened its Palermo last year. It followed a similar approach in Spain a year or so again and signed up Airtel and Xfera for UMTS in that market. This strategy seems to be paying off.

Most recent 3G contracts have gone to Ericsson and Nokia and this is the first Nortel 3G announcement for several months, and reestablishes their momentum in this market.

The Financial Times reports that Nortel and Nokia have each won 30% of Omnitel's 3G investment and the rest will go to the best performer of the two. The Nortel contract is valued at 43 m US dollars. This is an astute move from Omnitel to ensure they get priority attention from both suppliers.
