"Jesus was in a hostile environment and being defensive..."

Hostile environment? yes, defensive, no. Unless you want to argue that the best defense is a good offence? There is no denial, rather, Jesus initiates the subject, going on the offence, by asking a leading question. Where does the question lead? To the conclusion that not only was Jesus, (Son of David), the Christ, (Messiah), but that He was Lord to David, a position that could only be filled by God. These people were like those who, against the advise of their lawyers testify in their own behalf and end up handing the case to the prosecution. Lawyers make the worst clients. No wonder they didn't "dare question Him anymore.". They learned their lesson even though they were not interested in being taught.
