Goldman was the buyer of the puts sold by Dell and they were also the seller of the calls bought buy Dell as part of the share repurchase program. Goldman agreed to take net settlement in shares rather than cash so Dell could keep any liability resulting from share fluctuation off the balance sheet. I'm certain that Goldman hedged their position so they can't lose money no matter what happens. I would love to see the actions GS took to completely eliminate the risk.
