The Jewish people were and are frequently wrong about their messianic expectations. They missed the suffering servant of Isa 53: and the fact that Messiah would come (and be "cut off") before the destruction of Herod's temple in Dan 9: . So it's of little surprise that they might have misunderstood other things. What does the Scripture say? That is what is important. Most scholars recognize this statement by God in Gen 3: as being the first promise of the Messiah to come. Notice who's seed is referred to.

"I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel."
