Hmm.. if they have already spent 2/3rd of their capex, the semis are in trouble...

However much I admire Andy Grove, I think the idea of spending out of a slowdown is ridiculous at some junctures. The era of overspending in US may be coming to an end on the business side...

Sorry but just had to respond...

Intel has actually spent more than 2/3 of their Capex budget already this year. Further, Andy Grove has always said that you have to spend your way out of a slowdown. Yes, Intel's Capex budget is huge and yeah, their business has been stronger, but they are cash rich and cash flow rich, and aggressive as hell. Grove's theory is that in times like this, the big boys HAVE to spend to stay on top, and it's only afterwards if they know if they've succeeded or not.

Hey Freep... I get the creeps when people talk like that. Ontario (province of Canada) went through the phase about 10 years or so ago. The NDP (excuse me while I heave; a Socialist party), tried to spend their way out of the last recession 'circa 90, ) FWIW, we are still paying down the debt on that stupid move.

Andy G. should know better. Most tech companies have never seen a recession. Especially one as severe as this one is reported to be.

Regards,
Peter

Freep, you're right: I do not "know". My sense is that this is a house of cards and Intel will do anything to keep things going. Their earnings are plummeting-- that I DO know! Their valuation is the highest in adecade-- that I also know
