It is possible to work across clock boundaries. The NB could have a mem controller that runs at a speed different from the FSB, but it adds a clock or two to latency + the added FSB-based clocks required for the slower data to come in.

Some keep forgetting that longer latency hurts more apps than lower bandwidth. Why do people think the SDR NBs are capable of sending the required data first before the rest of the 32byte bursts? I believe this is also the main reason why like DRDRAM, DDR advantage over SDR will be marginal with most apps, but it should never be slower than sdr.
